Courting Confusion

This story was slightly confusing. I had a hard time figuring out what "hooking up" meant. I think this story is like a timeline for us to compare about "hooking up" in the older generations and our generation. I think "hooking up" in the older generations meant to get married, but in our generation, "hooking up" generally means to have a relationship with someone, most preferrably the opposite sex. If a girl asked to hook up with another girl, and remember the term "hooking up" in our generation means to have a relationship with someone, people would assume the girl to be gay. The term is most often and best used with the opposite sex, not marriage. When someone mentions the saying "asked the (big) question", it usually means someone has asked or mentioned the thought of marriage. I'm sure there are other terms in this generation, but I don't know them all. To me, "hooking up" is the first stage of marriage. The boy and hooks up, become friends, then boyfriend and girlfriend if the relationship deepens to which he courts me, to fiances, and finally to husband and wife. I don't how the older generations prepared for marriage, but this is how I'd do it.
